In Country Heaven

Anthology from Reach / The Dawntreader subscribers. Indigo Dreams Press

Editor, Ronnie Goodyer

In Country Heaven is the latest poetry anthology from Indigo Dreams Press: a midwinter anthology with not a trace of Christmas! Under the editorship of Ronnie Goodyer, the poems, which all have a rural theme, are the work of subscribers to Reach and The Dawntreader. Over 40 poems from as many poets are presented, and despite a common thread, are all very different both in style and subject matter. There are too many to do justice to them all, but a few especially excellent works should be mentioned.

First, Dawn Bauling’s ‘Do not wake me’ with the lovely lines

…organza ruff on sea silk hissing

Wet and angry with a bargained sun.

Next, a short poem by Patrick B. Osada, Deer on Keith’s Field:

Diamond shoed

Dancing down frosty glitter

captures so well the image of a deer on a winter’s morning.

Angela Porter tells us in Longhope, Gloucestershire, with an interesting use of almost-rhymes

…...light sweeps shadowed inclines

and scans the tufts of dusty matted wool;

the bumps of rugged, deeply churned fresh finds

and dents of field, the fractures of the soil.

An indoor scene in Winter Morning by Pamela Trudie Hodge, describes the farmer who

sits at the wooden table ancestor-made a hundred years before

from fallen oak in fourteen acre, notched and scarred by time,

autographed with homework scribbles;

a wonderful sense of continuity.

One more must suffice, my favourite, from Laurajayne Friedlander describing Winter Barley, a very evocative poem, living and sensual, ending with the so-effective

Ah;

everything parting to let us through.

In all an excellent anthology: Reachers and Treaders have really pulled out all the stops here, to give a collection well worth its asking price of £4 – less than 10 pence a poem!

"Thoroughly enjoyed In Country Heaven. I love how all the poets drew you in to the place they were writing about; it gave a sense of love, memories and passion. Excellent."     Tracy Ruthven
